iPad, are you going to buy one?

I am not a big fan of Apple computer and I am quite satisfied with this PC, I am typing on. I am still with Nokia and haven’t ‘touched’ the iPhone yet. But, the rumour of Apple tablet was too much not to notice!Today Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, revealed the much waited mystery touch screen device. Many expected it to cost about $1,000 but it came with a much cheaper price tag. Given the features and specifications, the device in itself doesn’t seem to be that much revolutionary. It was a bit underwhelming for the most. Said that, it is also true that the device holds a lot of promise. What I don’t like of the device:
- It is too big an iPod
- Too small to fit in all the music (only 16-64GB)
- No multi-tasking
- No USB or Memory Card slots
- No camera – no video chat, video conferencing
- Closed system like iPhone – can only run applications approved by Apple (unless jailbroken)
Apple makes use of technology to redefine existing technology and make them more useful for the users.
If we look at it’s history, we can find a lot of example on how Apple redefined the technology market.
- Apple didn’t invent mouse but it was the first to use it in it’s computer.
- iPod was a late entry in MP3 players market but managed to capture the market in a short time.
- iPhone similarly managed to encroach other device’s market towards its success.
I can see that iPad is no exception. It seems like Apple wants iPad to be the platform for the digital distribution of entertainment and information like books, magazines, video, and TV contents. Let’s see!

As the owner of one of the biggest all Apple studios in Nepal, I say heck yes I want one. Invaluable when traveling to show clients our work and when not able to carry a fully loaded MacBook Pro. But folks need to understand, this is more of a seed device…where it will seed uses not perceived when initially released. As a user of an iPhone, I can see how the usability of this device is going to be far superior then any other tablet PC on the market (a 5-year old can operate this), and as Apple rolls out improvements (camera, i/o ports, etc) the iPad will become mainstream fairly quickly. After all, we have all wanted one of these since first seeing them on Star Trek TNG:)
Cheers,
